Data: Your Secret Teaching Weapon
Improve Student Outcomes with Data-Driven Insights
When I first started teaching collecting data was the bane of my existence. I probably felt this way because it sent me straight back to those math and science classes where my data was always incorrect! But throughout my educational career I realized that data was my friend rather than my foe.
Once I learned that data was everything, not just the numbers on a final assessment, the data I collected began to expand and I found creative ways to assess my students progress on their academic and social goals. The data I collected also helped me justify the instructional strategies and activities that I implemented in my classroom.
Data is a tool for enhancing intuition.
If you are homeschooling there may not be as much pressure to continually track data as teachers in the classroom. However, getting into the habit of consistently tracking your child’s progress will make creating your portfolio for evaluations at the end of the year much easier. As a classroom teacher, finding innovative ways to enhance what you’re already doing will keep your classroom exciting.
